‘Faces of Death’ and 10 other horror movie remakes

Faces of Death, a new horror film starring Euphoria alum Barbie Ferreira, opens in theaters Friday.
The movie is a remake of the notorious 1978 film of the same name, which presents a series of grisly deaths as if it was a documentary. The original movie was banned in several countries but also developed a cult following.
The new Faces of Death is directed by Daniel Goldhaber and stars Ferreira as Margot, a mod for a video-sharing platform who discovers a killer who appears to be recreating deaths from the original film.
Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Aaron Holliday, Jermaine Fowler and Charli XCX also star in the film. Here is a list of 10 other remakes in the horror genre.
‘Hellraiser’
The 2022 supernatural horror film is a remake of the 1987 movie based on the Clive Barker novella The Hellbound Heart.
In this version, Odessa A’zion stars as Riley McKendry, a recovering addict who encounters a mysterious puzzle box created by the Cenobites, a group of extradimensional beings who thrive on sadomasochistic torture and killing.
David Bruckner directed the Hellraiser remake, which also features Jamie Clayton, Adam Faison, Drew Starkey, Brandon Flynn and Aoife Hinds. The movie is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.
‘The Invisible Man’
The 2020 sci-fi horror movie reimagines the 1933 classic film inspired by the H. G. Wells novel.
Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) stars as Cecilia Kass, a woman who is tormented by an invisible figure after escaping an abusive relationship.
Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Harriet Dyer and Michael Dorman also star in the film, written and directed by Leigh Whannell (Wolf Man).
The Invisible Man is available to stream on Hulu.
‘Suspiria’
The 2018 supernatural horror film is a remake of the 1977 movie from famed Italian horror director Dario Argento.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name), the remake stars Dakota Johnson as Susie Bannion, an American who moves to West Berlin in the 1970s to attend a dance academy where students have mysteriously gone missing.
Suspiria also stars Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth and Chloë Grace Moretz, and is available to rent on streaming platforms.
‘It’
The 2017 supernatural horror movie reimagines the 1990 miniseries based on the Stephen King novel.
Jaden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer and Wyatt Oleff star as the members of the Losers Club, a group of outcast kids living in Derry, Maine, who must contend with an evil entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård).
The It remake is available to stream on HBO Max and Hulu, along with its 2019 sequel, It Chapter Two. In addition, the prequel series It: Welcome to Derry was released on HBO in the fall.
‘We Are What We Are’
The 2013 horror movie is a remake of the 2010 Mexican film from director Jorge Michel Grau.
Bill Sage stars as Frank Parker, a father living with his two daughters, Iris (Ambyr Childers) and Rose (Julia Garner), in the Catskill Mountains. The family’s dark secret starts to come to light after the death of Frank’s wife.
Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth) directed and co-wrote We Are What We Are, which also features Wyatt Russell, Kelly McGillis and Michael Parks. The movie is available to stream on Prime Video and Tubi.
‘Evil Dead’
The 2013 supernatural horror movie is a reboot of the iconic 1981 film directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell.
The new version stars Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez as Mia and David, half-siblings who encounter a demon while staying at their family’s remote cabin with friends. Campbell makes a cameo as his character, Ash Williams, in a post-credits scene.
Evil Dead is available to stream on Prime Video.
‘Let Me In’
The 2010 horror movie is a remake of the 2008 Swedish film Let the Right One In, based on the John Aivide Lindqvist novel.
Kodi Smit-McPhee stars as Owen, a bullied 12-year-old boy who befriends his new neighbor, Abby (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young girl who is secretly a vampire.
Let Me In also stars Elias Koteas and Richard Jenkins, and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film is available to stream on Tubi.
‘The Crazies’
The 2010 sci-fi horror film reimagines the 1973 movie from famed horror director George A. Romero, who served as an executive producer on the new version.
The remake stars Timothy Olyphant as David, the sheriff of a small town in Iowa where the residents start exhibiting strange and violent behavior.
The Crazies also stars Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson and Danielle Panabaker, and is available to stream on the Roku Channel.
‘The Fly’
The 1986 sci-fi body horror classic is a remake of the 1958 film based on the George Langelaan short story.
Directed and written by David Cronenberg, The Fly stars Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle, a scientist who becomes fused with a housefly in an experiment gone wrong. Geena Davis also stars as Seth’s love interest, Ronnie.
The Fly is available to rent on streaming platforms.
‘The Thing’
The 1982 sci-fi horror movie reimagines the 1951 film The Thing from Another World, based on the John W. Campbell novella Who Goes There?
Famed horror director and composer John Carpenter directs the remake starring Kurt Russell as R. J. MacReady, an American helicopter pilot whose team encounters the “Thing,” an alien lifeform that assimilates and imitates other organisms, including humans.
The cast of the cult classic film also includes Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon and Keith David. The Thing is available to rent on streaming platforms.
