Roadside Attractions announced Thursday that it has acquired the rights to the documentary Cookie Queens. Roadside will release the film theatrically this Summer.

Cookie Queens premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, where UPI praised its depiction of young Girl Scouts’ business acumen and family struggles. Director Alysa Nahmias followed Scouts ages 5 to teenagers.

Meghan and Harry, Duchess and Duke of Sussex are executive producers. Meghan said in a statement, “As a former Girl Scout myself, with my mom as my troop leader, I have a personal affinity for this film.”

The film received standing ovations at its Sundance screenings. Nahmias noted that while a beloved traditions, cookie sales generate $800 million annually for Girl Scouts of America.

“This became a fascinating lens to explore a story about girlhood — the ambition, resilience, humor and vulnerability that emerge as these girls navigate growing up in a world shaped by the tensions between community and capitalism,” Nahmias said.
