A24 announced Friday that Backrooms will premiere on digital video-on-demand Tuesday. Rentals and purchases are available for pre-order.
Based on Kane Parsons’ YouTube shorts made with Blender animation software, Backrooms opened with $81.5 million on May 28. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as the owner of a furniture store who discovers a seemingly infinite surreal world behind his walls.
Renate Reinsve plays his therapist. Lukita Maxwell, Finn Bennett and Mark Duplass also star. Parsons turned 21 in June, having made the film at 20.
A24 released an extended version of Backrooms on July 3. The film, along with Focus Features’ Obsession, have been surprise box office juggernauts.
Obsession premiered on VOD in June and Universal Studios Home Entertainment just announced its Peacock streaming date today.
