‘Over Your Dead Body’ and 6 other films about couples facing off

Over Your Dead Body, a new comedy horror film starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving, opens in theaters Friday.
The movie is a remake of the 2021 film The Trip and follows Dan (Segel) and Lisa (Weaving), a couple who take a romantic trip to a remote cabin, only to learn they plan to kill each other.
Also starring Paul Guilfoyle, Keith Jardine, Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis, Over Your Dead Body is one of several films about warring couples. Here’s a list of six others:
‘Gone Girl’
The 2014 psychological thriller starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike is based on the Gillian Flynn novel.
Directed by David Fincher (Se7en), Ben Affleck stars as as Nick, a teacher whose wife Amy (Pike) goes missing on their wedding anniversary. Nick gets caught in a cat-and-mouse game with Amy after becoming the prime suspect in her disappearance.
Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry and Carrie Coon also star Gone Girl, which is available to rent on streaming platforms.
‘The Break-Up’
The 2006 romantic comedy stars Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston as Gary and Brooke, a couple whose split turns acrimonious when they both refuse to move out of their shared condo.
The cast also includes Joey Lauren Adams, Ann-Margret, Jason Bateman, Judy Davis, Vincent D’Onofrio and Jon Favreau.
The Break-Up is is available to stream on Hulu and Starz.
‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’
The 2005 action comedy from Bourne Identity director Doug Liman stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as John and Jane Smith, a couple who are both secretly assassins for competing agencies.
Adam Brody and Kerry Washington also star in the film, which is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith was also reimagined as a 2024 series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine that is available on Amazon Prime.
‘Intolerable Cruelty’
The 2003 romantic comedy is co-written by the Coen brothers and directed by Joel Coen.
George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones star as Miles and Marylin, a couple who first meet when Miles serves as Marylin’s husband’s divorce attorney.
The star-studded cast also includes Geoffrey Rush, Cedric the Entertainer and Billy Bob Thornton.
Intolerable Cruelty is available to rent on streaming platforms.
‘The War of the Roses’
The 1989 black comedy directed by Danny DeVito is based on the novel by Warren Adler.
Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner star as Oliver and Barbara Rose, a couple whose conflict escalates to extremes when they are forced to live together in the same house during their divorce. DeVito also stars as Oliver’s attorney, Gavin.
The War of the Roses is available to rent on streaming platforms.
The movie was remade as the 2025 film The Roses, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. That version can be streamed on Hulu and Disney+.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
The 1966 drama is based on the Edward Albee play and marks the directorial debut of Mike Nichols (The Graduate).
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton star as Martha and George, an unhappy couple who engage in a war of words while socializing with a younger couple, Nick (George Segal) and Honey (Sandy Dennis).
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? won five Oscars, including Best Actress for Taylor and Best Supporting Actress for Dennis. It is available to rent on streaming platforms.
