Rialto Pictures and StudioCanal announced Thursday that Terminator 2: Judgment Day will return to theaters in May. The 35th anniversary re-release opens May 22.

Terminator 2 opened July 3 19991 for that summer’s 4th of July weekend, seven years after the original. In a twist, Arnold Schwarzenegger played a cyborg killer reprogrammed to protect young John Connor (Edward Furlong).

The new terminator helped John break his mother, Sarah (Linda Hamilton) out of a mental hospital she’d been committed to for her predictions of the apocalyptic future. Sarah Connor was not happy to see a robot in the same visage as the one who hunted her in 1984.

Robert Patrick played the T-1000, a then-groundbreaking liquid metal technology that allowed him to morph into other people and sharp silver shapes while absorbing bullets. Joe Morton played Miles Dyson, the architect of the Syknet AI that battled humanity in the future.

Director James Cameron co-wrote with William Wisher and produced with Gale Anne Hurd.

The eight-week re-release includes 4K, 4K 3-D, 35mm and 70mm prints.
