Universal Pictures announced Tuesday that it will re-release Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas for the film’s 25th anniversary. The movie returns to theaters Dec. 12.

Originally released on Nov. 18, 2000, the film is directed by Ron Howard. Jeffrey Price & Peter S. Seaman adapted the Dr. Seuss book.

Jim Carrey donned a full green fur suit to play The Grinch, who terrorizes Whoville on Christmas Eve. Residents of Whoville included Taylor Momsen, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Bill Irwin, Molly Shannon and more.

In addition, Howard’s brother Clint had a role as Whobris. Rick Baker designed the Grinch makeup and won an Oscar.

The film grossed $260 million in the United States and $345 million worldwide. Only Home Alone is a higher grossing holiday film.

An Illumination animated The Grinch film was released by Universal in 2018.
